This weekend several of my team and I will be flying to California to attend the International Salon & Spa Expo in Longbeach. ISSE is the best show out west but our real reason for going is that open casting calls for season 2 of Shear Genius are being held. The show ran on Bravo last year and it was pretty cool. I see it as being a fantastic opportunity but not with out some challenges not the least of which being the commitment to 3-5 weeks away from family, friends and work. I'm not thrilled with the idea of having no control over how I am portrayed on television as well. That said what amazing exposure! The more I think about it the more interested I get about the inner workings of one of these shows. So cross your fingers, say a prayer, do a dance or what ever you do to wish me luck I'll need it.

Too bad a couple of the bands are pretty cool and the rag the puts the show on always has the best old school and home built choppers. I still would love to hook up and ride with more people but riding solo is really cool too.

Where to start. Mom and baby are awesome. I can finally feel Bjorn kicking around in there and Dawn is beautiful. I can't wait to meet this little dude and teach him and learn from him. October seems very close and very far. It's only three months but so much needs to happen between now and then, so much will happen between now and then.

Construction or destruction is on going at the pad. The closet that I am adding to the master bedroom is almost ready for paint and the baby's room is waiting for tape and mud, anyone wanting to give me a hand just yell, we decided to make the walls all smooth which has been quite a bit of work. The hole in the ceiling and the bathroom are still looming in the background and I could come up with a list of projects as long I cared to.

My bike still sits in my workshop. I have new heads and pistons coming all that needs to be done is reassembly and break in. I will be so happy to get it running again, I miss riding so much and I want Bjorn to know the sound of daddies bike when he's born. Plus at over $3 a gal. putting gas in the jeep is like burning money.

The salon is busy and I'm doing more extensions. Tomorrow the new place will be a year old, we'll celebrate somehow I'm sure. Our newest protege quit saturday, I had no idea. Some how I feel like I could have made a difference and I feel like she was going to be a valuable member of our team. It has made me think about my role in the salon and about what a mentor does. I think were I given the responsibility of grooming her she would be well on her way to success both for herself and for Salon Sandoval.

The audition I had in L.A. was some what successful. I impressed every one with my technical skills in hair cutting and styling. They saw in me some qualities that they really like and a great presence. Thank god because my presentation was not up to Aveda standards. They feel that with some work I may be ready for "boot camp" in Oct. and they want to invest some time in me so I'll see where it goes from here.

So much is always going on in my life and the lives of everyone around me that I feel at times it's futile to try to keep up. I have a difficult time keeping track of myself and were I'm supposed to be on a daily basis. I catch bits and pieces of everyone's story but often the details don't stick. Maybe it's what I do for a living, I'm in conversation learning about my clients and getting life updates from them all day long. The ones that have a negative impact are VERY few and far between and there is one now and then that just doesn't bring anything to the party but most of them I TRULY care about. They are people, each interesting and special and I value what they add to my life greatly. After engaging in this exchange of ideas, antic dotes, opinions and chit chat for eight or nine (or ten) hours I'm often spent as if the CPU has a 33% duty cycle. It effects my social behavior, not negatively necessarily, it just does. The news and the world around me can have an effect as well, some days I'm just tired of hearing the same $hit over and over. How am I being enriched by this? So many talking, nobody doing(do I fall into that?). This was supposed to be a post about whats been going on not about how cluttered with information my brain is.

I spent my morning yesterday completely out of sorts. For a variety of reasons I was bent out of shape. I have the increasing pressure of needing to make progress on this house. The strains on my relationship with my dad. And an overwhelming lack of time for my wife or for myself and how that affects our relationship. My favorite escape (my bike) is taken apart in my shop and won't be back on the road for a while. I need a vacation. When I arrived at work Rikki and Alissa both could tell that there was a porcupine in the building. But then when I had really found my stride and was prepared to incinerate all that crossed my path, good things started happening and ruined my plans of world wide domination and tyranny.

A favorite client who has moved away came in while he was in town. Fred is always up and said in regard to how my day was going "Awesome thats super!". We proceeded to have a ball, he has a new boy friend so he was all happy about that. Then awhile later a phone call came in for me. It was Thomas at Aveda education calling to invite me to come audition to become an Aveda pureffesional. This is something I had started to work towards, though I have been neglecting these parts of my career. Now I'm pretty excited and very nervous, I haven't taught a class in a while and feel a little under prepared at the same time I was in a class Sunday that I critiqued and reorganized in my head all the while. I think that I'm an outstanding educator I don't know how good of a public speaker I am though. I'll have to teach a couple more classes real quick between now and then to get my groove on. Auditions are on June 19 in Orange County they are emailing me a packet of information and there will be a conference call in the next weak or two I'll keep everyone posted (well, as well as I ever do).

Joel

P.S. I got a laser pointer for the dogs. OMG! too much fun.

So bike week is off and running and I feel obligated to play. I took deaddawn to the steel horse saloon for a bike show and shenanigans yesterday. She was a trooper, the back portion of my seat is very lean and contoured to the bike but not very plush and comfy. This was her longest ride and probably twice as much riding as would have been fun for her but she put up with it (thanks baby!). So we had a good time and there were some cool bikes but I've discovered that if I ever want to be biker trash I 've got some work to do LOL. Today I headed out on the Sunshine Acres charity poker run to Tortilla Flat and was having a good time until the second card stop when I noticed oil all over the bike. I went over everything but couldn't find the culprit so I went to my uncles and put the bike on a lift and took a better look but still couldn't find anything wrong. It runs fine and there are no obvious leaks so I'm going to B1's (I don't think it's the name his mama gave him) house, he's the guy who built the motor, so he can have a look. Some time this week I plan to head out to Cyclefest out at West World and then there is an antique motorcycle show and swap meet on Sunday that I plan to go to. I have so much fun riding my bike around it feels like being a kid kicking ass through the neighbor hood on your Schwinn only it's a 1340cc Schwinn that gets up to 65 mph real fast.

My trip to the San Juan river was rather eventful. What normally would be an eight hour drive with all the usual breaks for snacks and bodily functions turned into a thirteen hour drive. Leaving town Sunday morning the snow was beautiful, there were people off the side of the road everywhere playing in it. It was take the zonies to the snow day. When we got to Superior the road was closed to Miami for a wreck so we had to detour through Kearny and Winkleman. We Popped out in Globe only to find what looked like a movie. The town was packed with cars. Not a single store, gas station or fast food was open and all of the lights in town were out. The storm had knocked out their power rendering them medieval. The road to Showlow had not been plowed yet and people were trapped. We thought about selling our sandwiches and beer to capitalize on the situation. A DPS officer told Dave and I that it would be at least two hours before the road would be clear, but he didn't know about what would lay beyond Showlow. We consulted the atlas and planed our next detour which took us damn near El Paso not really a good program when you're headed to Durango almost. For the geographically challenged the detour meant driving to the bottom of New Mexico and then driving all the way back up to the top of the state. Along the way I got a ticket. The river was great and weather was cold but clear and the fishing was mostly good. The ride home went smoothly. Now I need to rest up from my vacation.

I'd better start acting human again before my wife and dogs leave me.

I love tooling around on my scoot. I hooked up with an old friend I hadn't seen in at least five years this weekend. Dawn and I rode to meet him at IHOP and then we all rode to the crib. Will checked out my bike, he has been working on bikes since before he could drive. We had a good time and it was nice to reconnect and it will be nice to have someone to ride with. Today it was beautiful out, riding is sooooo much better when you're not freezing you lips off. I tried to catch up with another friend and my mom and missed them both and then almost missed my girl.

I was feeling happier and more motivated than I had in a while I probably just needed some fresh air and sunshine. I was going to work around the house and be productive in general after eating but. I cut the tip off my finger slicing a two day old bagel. Ouch. I sliced about a 1.5mm thick kidney shaped chunk off of it. So much for building closets and what not. I need to run to the store for first aide stuff.

J

    <lj:music>Oakendfold</lj:music>

The end of last week brought a flurry of activity to the salon. Thursday I had just finished applying some color when Gigi comes around the corner with suds on her hands saying "why did the water stop?". I went to the mortgage company across the hall they had no water either, phew bill's paid. Chris spots an official looking truck and walks over to investigate what follows is a funny exchange the goes something like Scottsdale water guy "Hairdresser huh." (chris really does look the part) Chris "Water guy?.?." w.g. "Yep." c "So now that we know each other I need a favor". We walk back to the salon and Chris exclaims "That's all we need with the camera crew coming." that caught my attention, we had been asked to do a T.V. spot but I hadn't heard anything since the initial contact. Apparently Chris didn't know we would be filming that day but when the called and said they were on the way, what were we going to say "No don't come and give us free pub today!". All went well though and we should be coming to your living room soon. I believe The show airs on CBS Saturday morning, its kind of like Access Hollywood I'll keep everyone posted.

Sunday we did a big shoot for Java magazine. I'm glad to be back in there as an advertiser and as an artist, Robert is great to work with and the rag always pulled in good clients that were willing to do fun stuff to their hair. Any how we had lots of models and all the hair kicked ass, wardrobe was good but we'll be looking out for cooler places to get wardrobe from in the future. The star of the show was Chopper a standard puddle loaned to us by the groomers across from the salon. He is a show dog with impeccable manners and the groomer dyed him pink for us. I had to laugh when I got to the studio and there were five or six extra guys there. None were from the magazine or involved with the shoot, as far as I could tell they brought their cameras to get spank material and hang out with hot chicks. That's not really how we roll but the shoot turned out well none the less, it just took longer. I haven't seen the pics yet but it will be in the next Java, which will have a new format.

Hands hurt, I know I'm going to grow up and have arthritis, out.
